RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University's women's soccer team held firm over the University of Incarnate Word on Friday, as the Lancers shutout the Cardinals, 1-0.
"It was a strong team effort to earn the win and shutout today," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We're getting better every day on both sides of the ball; however, this game was closer than it needed to be. I thought our defense did a great job. We need to continue to get sharper around the goal. Overall, we generated some excellent scoring opportunities; unfortunately, we came up short on finishing today."
It was a story of throw-ins, passing, and deflections for the first 20 minutes of the game. The Lancers were able to gain control, and immediately put pressure on the Cardinals' backline with three consecutive shots.
The Lancers remained in the driver seat for much of the first half, as 61 percent of the possession in the first 45 minutes was held on the Lancers' offensive side.
CBU rattled off 11 shots to the Cardinals zero, with the closest opportunity coming from Rola Badawiya.
Amy Aquino was able to take on the double team and draw the foul outside the 18. Badawiya and company lined up for the free-kick to set up the distraction of who would take the shot. Badawiya was able to bend the ball a bit, but it nicked the crossbar and sailed high.

The Lancers went into the scoreless half, dominating possession and shots.
Coming out of the break, the Lancers found their shining moment at the 66th minute. Karley Weeks gained control at midfield and played a beautiful ball to Miranda Hald, who was racing her defender to the box. Hald was able to create space and put a touch on the ball to beat the Cardinals' keeper for the game-winner.

The Lancers will look to keep the momentum going on Sunday when they host the Vandals of Idaho at 1 p.m.
