Lancer Trio Shines Versus Islanders

HAMMOND, La. – Big performances from Natalie Zimmerer, Nicole Abreu and Christine Graf were not enough to lead California Baptist University past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
Zimmerer put together another all-around performance with 27 assists, 11 digs and four kills. Abreu led the defense with 16 digs, while Graf had a team-high 11 kills on a .318 percentage (11-4-22) and six digs in a 26-24, 25-23, 25-21 loss to the Islands in the Southeastern Louisiana Lion Up Classic.
The Lancers (3-6) will head to the Nevada Tournament next weekend where they will face Gonzaga and Southern Utah on Friday at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, and Nevada on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CBU will then make its home debut versus Saint Katherine on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Islanders (6-4) were picked to finish fifth in the 13-team Southland Conference in the preseason poll, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see them overachieve as they received three first-place votes.
Behind Graf, CBU's offense was led by Megan Sester (eight), Yagoda Jedrzejczak (seven) and Sydney Marks (seven), who all had at least seven kills. Jedrzejczak also had three digs, a block and an ace, while Marks added 11 digs.
