
Lancers Win Big at Nevada Tournament

The Lancers knocked off Gonzaga and Southern Utah, two teams who came into the day with strong records. CBU overcame the Bulldogs in four sets (25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 25-12) and then swept the Thunderbirds (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) in even more impressive fashion.

Christine Graf and Nicole Abreu both had historically significant matches against the Thunderbirds. Despite their being only three sets, they each entered CBU's NCAA-era top-10 record books.
Graf compiled 22 kills on a .541 percentage in just three sets with Southern Utah. It tied Lauren Hackett's NCAA-era record for kills in a three-set match and most kills in a match by a true freshman. Hackett first set it with 22 kills against Fresno Pacific on Sept. 19, 2014.

Abreu tallied 24 digs, along with six assists, an ace and a kill. It tied for the 10th most in an NCAA-era match for CBU, and was one of the three-set record of 25 digs set by Nicci Hinderaker against Western Washington on September 7, 2017.
CBU was in a tough spot down to Southern Utah, 17-12, in set one. The Lancers flipped the script and took an 18-17 lead with a 6-0 run fueled by two kills each from Graf and Sydney Marks. Down 21-20 a few plays later, CBU completed the comeback with a 5-2 run highlighted by a kill each from Graf, Yagoda Jedrzejczak, Megan Sester and Natalie Zimmerer.

Zimmerer filled up the stat sheet against the Thunderbirds with 41 assists, eight kills, six kills on a .545 percentage (6-0-11), two blocks and an ace. The Lancers hit .316 in the match (54-12-133), with Jedrzejczak adding eight kills on a .533 percentage (8-0-15) and three blocks.
CBU improves to 5-6 on the year, while Gonzaga and Southern Utah fall to 6-4 and 6-5 on the year, respectively. The Lancers conclude the Nevada Tournament against the host Wolfpack on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Nevada has live stat and video coverage throughout the weekend.
Defense and a strong attack from the service line helped put CBU over the top versus the Bulldogs. The Lancers had a 10-2 advantage in aces and 65-58 edge in digs. Zimmerer accumulated 40 assists, 10 digs and two aces in the match, while Elizabeth Gilley had five aces and eight digs of her own. Her five aces tying for the third most in an NCAA-era match for the Lancers.

CBU finished set one versus Gonzaga on an 8-1 run thanks to two kills each from Chandler Gorman and Marks. The Lancers got out to a 6-2 lead in set two and then ended it on a 3-1 run, with the help of a kill from Graf and Marks.
After a Gonzaga win in set three, CBU rebounded in a big way with a dominant 25-12 victory in the fourth. With Zimmerer at the service line, the Lancers used a 9-0 run – fueled by three Graf kills – to take a commanding 18-6 lead.
Four Lancers logged at least nine kills, with Graf posting a team-high 12 kills on a .458 percentage (12-1-24). Marks (two blocks) and Cassidy Dennison (nine digs) each had 10 kills, while Jedrzejczak added nine more to along with her five blocks.
Defensively, Paige Johnstone also had a team-and-career-high 18 digs and two aces. Abreu added 14 digs, as well.
