RENO, Nev. – Several big performances nearly brought California Baptist University back for a come-from-behind win on the road at Nevada.
The Wolfpack just managed to win the tightly-contested match in five sets (17-25, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12) on Saturday afternoon to conclude the Nevada Tournament. Sydney Marks and Yagoda Jedrzejczak both set new career-highs for kills, with 20 and 15 respectively. Nicole Abreu notched a season-high 28 digs, which tied for the third most in an NCAA-era match for the Lancers.
Abreu and Christine Graf, who had 11 kills and two blocks on Saturday, both earned all-tournament honors for their outstanding performances on the week.
Natalie Zimmerer had her second double-double of the week and fifth of the season, with a season-high 51 assists and 14 digs. Chandler Gorman had a team-high six blocks, while Paige Johnstone had 10 digs and Megan Sester finished with nine kills, three blocks and four digs.
Nevada improves to 10-2 on the year, while CBU moves to 5-7. The Lancers will make their long-awaited home debut with a non-conference match against Saint Katherine on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Van Dyne Gym. CBU will then begin Western Athletic Conference play with road matches at Kansas City and Chicago State on Saturday and Monday, Sept. 30.
CBU hung right with Nevada all afternoon, and were resilient in forcing a fifth set. The Lancers trailed 2-1 in the match and 20-17 in the fourth set. Back-to-back kills from Jedrzejczak then force a Nevada timeout, but CBU finished the set on an 8-2 run, with Marks and Jedrzejczak each tallying three kills in that span.

Quick thinking from Natalie Zimmerer, who quick attacks for a kill off a great dig from Nicole Abreu.#LanceUp⚔ pic.twitter.com/YkU8zqbfLM
