RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Twelve aces helped serve up a sweep for California Baptist University in its home opener with Saint Katherine on Thursday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
A 12-2 advantage in aces helped the Lancers keep the USK out of its offense and to a negative .128 hitting percentage (9-19-78) in a 25-14, 25-11, 25-12 victory. Carissa Rivette led CBU's attack from the service line, with a match-high six aces.
CBU's 12 aces and Rivette's six both rank third in the NCAA era for the Lancers. It was the first time since 2013 that CBU had 12 aces as a team in a match, and that a Lancer individual had six aces in a match. Elizabeth Gilley and Paige Johnstone each had two aces, as well.
Nicole Abreu tallied a match-high 11 digs, and Megan Sester and Christine Graf had nine and eight kills, respectively. Ellie Voss added six kills on a .714 percentage (6-1-7), while fellow middle blocker Chandler Gorman had four kills at a .500 clip (4-1-6). Hana Okuhara also had 19 assists, four digs and an ace off the bench.
The Lancers head into Western Athletic Conference play with a 6-7 record and with plenty of momentum, as winners of five of their last seven. Saint Katherine drops to 3-16 on the year. CBU begins the conference season at Kansas City on Saturday at 11 a.m. Pacific. Fans can follow along with live stats and video on the WAC Digital Network.
