RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- After establishing California Baptist University as one of the best intercollegiate cheer programs in the nation, Head Coach Tami Fleming has decided to step down from coaching.
"Coach Fleming has been a blessing to CBU Athletics," said Director of Athletics Dr. Micah Parker. "Tami's programs have been a big part of our excellent game environment in addition to winning competitions. She has helped transform the cheerleading program into a national powerhouse on the mat and in the classroom. She leaves our program in great shape. We all wish Tami and her family the best."
Fleming joined the CBU family as the head cheerleading coach in October 2010. She was named the third head coach since the program was started in 2006.
"These past nine years at CBU have been an incredible journey," said Fleming. "I am proud to say I am a Lancer, and this chapter in my life has been a blessing through and through. 'Passion, God, Success' is our team motto, and those three words have carried me through seven national titles, two NCAA Division changes, adding a dance team to our program, the beginning of STUNT, countless funny moments, dozens of non-believers learning about Christ, and too many memories to count. Coaching at CBU has truly been one of the best decisions of my life. Thank you to Dr. Ellis, Kent Dacus, and Dr. Parker for the opportunities afforded to me over the past nine years. I have been blessed to live my purpose at CBU. God's Got This."
In her nine years, the Lancers have won seven consecutive National Cheerleading Association championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
She pioneered the way for CBU to become the first-ever All-Girl Division II program to win six in a row. Fleming led the Lancers to a seventh straight NCA championship victory in the debut Division I season in 2018-19.
Recently, the CBU cheer team earned its ninth straight Gold Paid Bid to the NCA National Championships and the third straight Full Paid Bid to the USA Collegiate Championships.
For the past three years, the Lancers qualified two stunt groups for the national championship and saw one of the groups win the title for the first time in program history in 2017. The Lancers have not surrendered a defeat since the 2012 season. In 2013, Fleming was named California State Coach of the Year by Cheerpros.
Fleming joined CBU with more than 14 years of coaching experience in various capacities. From 2004-11, she was the owner of West Coast All-Stars, managing the day-to-day operations of the all-star cheer gym, coaching beginning, advanced, and collegiate level teams as well as overseeing a staff of 10 other coaches and 400 members.
A national search will begin immediately.
