Nunez, Strang Win Titles at California Collegiate Open

SAN FRANCISCO – Four top-three finishes and two championship performances made for a dominant run through the California Collegiate Open for California Baptist University.
The Lancers were officially represented in the tournament, which was hosted by San Francisco State, by 10 wrestlers on Saturday. Half of them secured top-five finishes, while seven at least reached the consolation semifinals.
Christian Nunez and Garrett Strang were the big winners on the day for the Lancers. Nunez won all three of his matches with pins to capture the 133-pound championship, while Strang went 4-0 with three technical-fall victories to secure the 184 title.
Arick Lopez advanced to the 197-pound championship match, with three bonus-point victories (two pins and a technical fall) before he ultimately finished runner-up. Keanu Perez won his first two matches with a technical fall and 16-10 decision, and then bounced back from a loss to take third place at 125, thanks to a 1-0 decision in the consolation championship.
Dilan Atjun finished fifth at 125 after he forfeited to Perez in the consolation semifinals. He ended his day with a 13-8 decision over Vanguard's Nathan Yanez.
Lorenzo De La Cruz (141) logged a 4-2 record on Saturday and advanced to the consolation championship where he suffered a 5-4 loss to San Francisco State's Joshua Fuentes Noriyo.
Adam Velasquez won his first two matches before medically forfeiting his last two matches. Josh Jimenez (141) and Cole Pruitt (165) also won a match for CBU.
CBU closes out its regular-season with three more duals on the road. The Lancers will wrestle at Sacred Heart on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 10:30 a.m. Pacific and then travel to Oregon State on Friday, Feb. 14, before a dual finale at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday, Feb. 22.
