PHOENIX --- For the second straight tournament of the spring season, California Baptist University battled against Mother Nature during the first round of the Grand Canyon Spring Invite on Saturday.
Rain forced the 85-player field to return to the clubhouse after an hour of play, as the officials suspended play with a couple of holes underwater.
After a two-hour delay, the horn sounded, and the teams went back to the course with light showers.
The two-day tournament was intended for 36 holes on day one and the final round of 18 holes on Sunday. With the delay, officials decided the first round would be shortened to 18 holes, and the tournament would change to 36 holes of competition instead of the original 54.
California Baptist finished the first day with a 3-over-par 291 team score to sit in second out of 14 teams. Grand Canyon, which is hosting the event at the Grand Canyon Championship Golf Course, went into the clubhouse as the day-one leader with a 1-under-par 287. CBU holds a three-stroke lead over third-place Portland State (294) and a five-stroke lead over fourth-place Seattle (296).
Sofia Chabon and Jocelyn Chee both posted rounds in the red, as the duo combined for a 3-under-par score. Chabon fired a career-best 2-under-par 70 to sit in a tie for fourth, while Chee shot a 1-under-par 71 to finish tied for sixth.
Diana Araneta fired off a 2-over-par 74 to place T-18th, while Samantha Martirez and Kristyna Abrahamova both finished with a 4-over-par 76. Belle Balkan competed as an individual for the Lancers and shot an 82 to place T-72nd.
The Lancers will chase the Lopes for the top spot during the final round on Tuesday, Feb. 23, with a 7 a.m. (PST) shotgun start.
