
CBU Wins in Record Time in WAC Opener

The Lancers logged four top-eight and two top-five finishes in just three events at the WAC Championships opener on Wednesday at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston.
It puts CBU in strong second-place standing after day one, with 97 points. Six-time defending WAC champion Northern Arizona leads the eight-team field with 118 points, while Grand Canyon is in third (88).

CBU's Rebeca Oviedo, Mackenzie Mergel, Isabella Rhodes and Mackenzie Degn won the 800-yard freestyle relay in a program-record time of seven minutes, 20.58 seconds. The victory was in thanks to a disqualification of CSU Bakersfield, which held a large lead in the event.
Time wise, it was not only good for an automatic qualifying time for the 2020 College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championship (CSCAA NIC), but was seven seconds faster the previous Lancer record of 7:27.22.

Diving took center stage for most of night one, as Kiree Lowe and Madeline Wiese both qualified for the championship finals. Lowe logged her best-ever finish in the WAC, as she took fifth place with a score of 242.70 in the finals. It was nearly 13 points better than her score of 229.80 in the prelims, which put her in seventh place going into he evening.

Wiese moved up a spot in the finals to take seventh place in her WAC debut on the boards. She scored a 225.35 in the prelims.
While she did not qualify for the championship finals, Savannah Uhlir had a top-six score among the 20 divers in competition. The senior scored a 253.55 in her final six dives to take second place in the consolation final and 10th place overall. It was a personal best for Uhlir to move her up to top-six standing in CBU's top-10 record book in the event.

CBU also took seventh in the 200-medley relay, with an automatic-qualifying time of 1:42.79 for the CSCAA NIC. Emily Longfellow, Faith Brazil, Nicole Cienega and Hannah Houlton swam the event for the Lancers.
The WAC Championships will go Thursday through Saturday, with prelims beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the finals starting at 4 p.m. Pacific each day.
