Honer Secures Top-9 Finish at Air Force

COLORADO SPRINGS – In the final event of the regular season, California Baptist University's divers traveled to its third top-flight meet of year at the Air Force Diving Invitational.
True freshman Evan Honer made another big splash with a top-nine finish on the first event of the weekend Thursday. The Lancers will dive again on Friday and Saturday at the Air Force Academy, with the men competing on 3-meter and the women on 1-meter.
CBU finds itself against top divers from all over the country this week, including Wyoming, Utah, BYU, New Mexico, Denver, Colorado State and Air Force. It's nothing new for the Lancer divers, who also participated in the UCLA and USC Diving Invites this season.
Honer recorded his fifth top-nine finish at those elite diving invites on Thursday. He punched his ticket to the second round on the 3-meter board when he took ninth-place with a score of 287.80 in the prelims. Tyler Stevens (240.20) and Zane Freeman (235.15) finished in 17th and 20th-place, respectively, in prelims.
A top-12 placing in prelims moved Honer on to the next round, as Air Force is running an elimination format to determine the winner on both boards. The top-12 competed in group stages until the field was brought down to the final two. The winner of that head-to-head matchup will be the AF Diving Invite Champion for that respective event.
In need of a top-two finish in his group of four to advance to the quarterfinals, Honer finished just about eight points off moving on with a score of 287.65. Denver's Jason Gleason's score of 295.50 advanced with a second-place finish in Group A.
Madeline Wiese and Savannah Uhlir finished back-to-back. Wiese finished in a tie for 19th place, with a score of 230.65, while Uhlir took 21st (226.35). Kiree Lowe (215.15) and Madison Liu (200.40) came in 26th and 30th, respectively.
