SMYRNA – Five California Baptist University Lancers secured All-American status with top-six finishes in their season finale at the 2020 National Collegiate Open on Sunday.
AJ Raya and Zach Schrader both took fifth place in the 149-pound and heavyweight brackets, while Dilan Atjun, Garrett Strang and Arick Lopez all finished sixth at Smyrna High School. Schrader and Strang have now earned All-American honors at the NCO the last two seasons after Schrader won the heavyweight title and Strang took fourth at 184 in 2019.
Raya made a run to the 149-bracket semifinals, with a first-round bye and wins in his first two matches against Princeton's Josh Breeding (4-3) and Air Force Prep's Zak Kohler (14-4).
Defense secured Raya's first win, as Breeding got in on a single leg in the last 10 seconds, but was unable to convert it to point thanks to Raya's defense. It was all offense for Raya in his second win, as he notched six takedowns in the quarterfinals.
Raya came up just short in his next two bouts, with a 13-9 loss to North Carolina's Mason Phillips in the semifinals and a 4-2 decision against Penn State's Terell Barraclough. He secured fifth place with a forfeit victory in his final match of the day.
Schrader won four matches for CBU on Sunday to give him 24 on the year, which is a new single-season record in the Lancers' NCAA Division I era. He owns a 62-29-1 career record for CBU, which ranks 11th in the program record books.
The junior got off to a good start by winning his first-round match over Michael Burchell of Appalachian State on a score of 12-1. He fell to Air Force Prep's Wyatt Hendrickson – the eventual tournament champion – late in the third period, but rebounded well.
The heavyweight opened the consolation bracket with a first-period pin on Long Island's Tim Nagosky and then picked up a 7-2 victory over Virginia's Mateusz Kudra. Schrader came up just short in a 3-0 loss to Utah Valley's Chase Trussell in the consolation semifinals, but he earned fifth place with a forfeit victory over North Carolina's Keaton Kluever.
Strang went 4-2 on the day to give him 23 wins on the year and 50 in his career, which ranks 19th in CBU history. He earned a win over Brett Mower (20-5) and Virginia's Drew Peck and two victories on Air Force Prep's Cal Sund (12-3 and 3-1) in his second and third matchups. His only two losses were to Max Shaw of North Carolina on scores of 8-2 and 6-1, while a double forfeit in the fifth-place match ended his day.
Atjun suffered a close, 7-5 defeat to Brandon Spellman in his first match on Sunday, but grabbed two convincing wins at over Drexel's David Colton (16-0) Air Force Prep's Brenden Chaowanapibool (11-2). He then got a rematch with Spellman and again came up just short in a 5-4 loss that put him in the fifth-place match, which he just lost Caleb Smith of Appalachian State, 5-2.
Lopez also suffered a loss in his first matchup, but then rattled off a forfeit win, 16-6 major of Navy Prep's Anthony Burburija and 6-2 decision on Maryland's Kevin Makosky. The redshirt sophomore lost a close decision to NC State's Jacob Ferreira (8-4), but ended his season with a 4-2 win over Appalachian State's Paul Carson in the fifth-place match.
The Lancers were also represented at the NCO by senior Jacob Cooper (174), junior Adam Velasquez (141) and freshmen Lorenzo De La Cruz (141), Christian Nunez (133), Zach Rowe (157). They all won at least one match on Sunday, with Rowe picking up two wins on the day.
