SAN LUIS OBISPO – After a 16-day layoff, California Baptist University wrestling made its return to the mat to face a strong Cal Poly team on Sunday in the Mott Athletics Center.
The Lancers won the final three matches of the day in impressive fashion, but fell to the Mustangs on a score of 30-12. Cal Poly, an affiliate member of the Pac-12 Conference, is off to a strong start to the season. The Mustangs nearly upset Oregon State in a 23-17 dual loss on Jan. 14 and opened Sunday with a dominant 33-8 win over Little Rock.
Caden Gerlach, Evan Bockman and Zach Schrader picked up CBU's three wins at 184, 197 and heavyweight, respectively. The trio now improves to 2-1 in duals on the season.
Gerlach put up bonus points with a first-period pin in his match. Defense got everything started for him, as he fended off a single-leg attempt from Cal Poly's Jarad Priest, and then dominated on top to seemingly easily secure the fall.
Bockman put on a takedown clinic in his bout, as he used four takedowns in his 9-5 victory over Trevor Tinker.
The most impressive win of the day belonged to Schrader, though, as he handed Sam Aguilar (4-1) his first loss of the season in overtime. It took three extra sessions to decide the winner, and Schrader notched a tough escape point in the waning seconds of the second overtime period to tie things up, 2-2, and force another sudden-victory situation.
Schrader locked in on an ankle pick and worked his way to the only takedown of the match for the 4-2 victory. Both of Schrader's wins have come in overtime, while he brings his career record to 65-30-1.
