RIVERSIDE – Despite out-shooting and out-rebounding Dixie State University, California Baptist University's men's basketball team fell to the Trailblazers, 79-75, snapping a five-game winning streak on Saturday night.
The Lancers entered the game up 1-0 in the series after beating Dixie State, 89-74, on Friday's matchup. California Baptist is now 8-5 on the season, and 3-3 in Western Athletic Conference play, while the Trailblazers move to 5-8 on the year and 1-5 in WAC action.
Reed Nottage was electric for the Lancers all night, going 9-16 from the field and 6-9 from the 3-point line. He tied his career-high with 26 points and added seven rebounds and four assists while playing all 40 minutes. He becomes just the third Lancer to hit six threes in a single game in the CBU Events Center for the men's basketball program (Ferron Flavors Jr., 11/22/19; Ty Rowell, 12/29/18).
Rowell finished behind Nottage with 20 points and dished out eight assists for the second straight night. Elijah Thomas and Tre Armstrong were the other two Lancers in double figures, as they finished with 12 and 10, respectively. Thomas recorded his second career double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds on the night. Gorjok Gak set a new career-high in rebounds, as the grad transfer brought in 18 rebounds – finishing one shy of tying De'jon Davis for most rebounds in a single-game for the Lancers in the Events Center.
The game was tightly contested for all 40 minutes, as the score changed hands 13 times and was tied nine times.
It came down to the final minute, as the Lancers trailed by two after Rowell blew by his defender for a fast-break layup, 77-75.
A quick foul put the Trailblazers on the line with 19 seconds left, but after missing the second free throw, Gak grabbed the rebound and found Rowell, who stormed up the court. Rowell pulled up from well behind the 3-point line, but the shot bounced off the rim to the right to narrowly miss the game-winner.
UP NEXT:
The Lancers will hit the road next week as they travel to El Paso, Texas, to face the defending WAC Champions NM State on Feb. 5-6. Both games are set for 5 p.m. (PST).
