OREM – California Baptist University wrestling made its much-awaited 2021 season debut on Friday in a dual doubleheader with a pair of Big-12 squads, Utah Valley and Northern Colorado.
The Lancers got individual victories from 141 pounder Chaz Hallmark, 165 Josh Grant, 184 Caden Gerlach, Evan Bockman at 197 and heavyweight Zach Schrader on the day.
CBU won its final three matches against Utah Valley to close out the 25-16 Wolverines' victory. The Lancers wound up being not far off the win themselves, as two of UVU's wins came in the waning seconds.
The 25th-ranked Northern Colorado Bears secured the 35-3 victory, with Grant scoring CBU's points in the dual.
Utah Valley won the 149-pound bout on a score of 3-2, thanks to two escapes and a riding-time point. The Wolverines then eked out a 3-0 win at 165 with another riding-time point and a takedown in the final 30 seconds of the match.
Redshirt freshmen Hallmark and Gerlach provided dominant performances in their official CBU debuts against Utah Valley. Hallmark trailed 4-2 in the first period but he quickly turned the tide with a series of takedowns and reversals, as he built up a 10-4 lead before ending the match with a second-period pin.
Gerlach also trailed in the early going of his match, 2-0, but used a pair of reversals to take a lead. He added two four-point nearfalls to secure the 13-5 major decision.
Bockman and Schrader came away with two tightly-contested decision victories for the Lancers. Bockman waited for his shot and built up a 3-0, second-period lead before he finished off the match with a takedown at the buzzer for a 5-2 decision.
Schrader forced overtime at heavyweight, thanks to a second-period reversal. He was calm and collected in the extra session and got the sudden-death victory about 30 seconds in.
Grant put on a clinic in his final match of the day with Northern Colorado, with three takedowns and a reversal carrying him to a comfortable 10-3 decision victory.
BIG PICTURE
Friday's season opener was a great test for CBU, as it was the first time it ever faced Utah Valley and Northern Colorado -- both Big 12 opponents. UNC improves to 2-0 on the year, while UVU begins the season at 1-0. The Wolverines qualified three wrestlers for the 2020 NCAA Division I Championships before it was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The 25th-ranked Bears qualified five individuals for the 2020 NCAAs. UNC is a team on the rise, fresh off a 24-19 dual victory over No. 23 Wyoming in its season opener.
RANKINGS
Both Utah Valley and Northern Colorado started multiple ranked wrestlers into Friday's duals.
Utah Valley's Taylor LaMont is ranked ninth overall at 125 pounds by InterMat, while 174-pounder Demetrius Romero is ranked sixth in the same poll.
Northern Colorado started six of its nine ranked wrestlers on Friday. The Bears were led by 133-pounder Mosha Swartz and 149er Andrew Alirez, who are both ranked seventh in their classes by Intermat. Heavyweight Dalton Robertson (No. 11, FloWrestling); 184 Alan Clothier (No. 18, TrackWrestling); 197 Jacob Seely (No. 19, FloWrestling) and 141 Chris Sandoval (No. 30, TheOpenMat & TrackWrestling) all competed on Friday, as well.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lancers are back in action in six days, as they will travel to face Pac-12 opponent Cal Poly on Thursday, Jan. 14 in San Luis Obispo. The dual is scheduled to be streamed by FloWrestling.
Last season's meeting between CBU and the Mustangs was one of the most exciting of the year, as Cal Poly pulled out a 19-16 victory in the Van Dyne Gym. Cal Poly may own a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series, which dates back to 2010, but prior to 2020 CBU actually won three of the previous four duals between the two from 2013-18.
