MORAGA, CA - California Baptist University women's basketball headed back on the road for a post-Thanksgiving doubleheader at the Saint Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, opening the tournament with a 68-56 win over UC Santa Barbara. The Lancers improve to 3-1 on the season while the Gauchos fall to 2-2.
The Lancers dominated in the paint, outscoring the Gauchos 48-22 in the key, to earn their fourth-straight win over UC Santa Barbara. Britney Thomas brought it off the bench today, recording game-high's with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Caitlyn Harper was right there with Thomas, dropping 16 points, while Ane Olaeta and Sydney Palma each scored 10.
First quarter action came slowly, as the score sat at just 6-4 in favor of UCSB at the first media timeout. Both offenses eventually found a groove, CBU led by Britney Thomas who single-handedly scored nine-straight Lancer points after that timeout.
CBU hit its stride in the second quarter, taking a lead roughly a minute into the period and never relented. With Thomas and Harper balancing sound defense with increasing foul totals, it was Olaeta (six points) and Palma (five) who would lead the Lancers to a four-point advantage at halftime.
CBU continued to pull away after halftime, stifling the Gaucho offense into just 18.4% (7-38) shooting in the second half, and just 9.1% (1-11) from three point land.
