RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University's STUNT team hosted the first-ever home event in the Van Dyne Gym Wednesday night, as the Lancers opened the 2021 season with an 18-5 victory over Vanguard.
"Words cannot describe the feeling of excitement and joy that came over the team when we were able to take the mat at our first ever home game," said head coach Brandon Seagondollar. "It's extremely exhilarating knowing that you are making history and being able to honor your school, yourself, and God."
In the first quarter, the Lancers took a 2-1 lead after partner stunts. CBU then came out swinging in the second quarter, taking all four rounds in the pyramid and tosses to go up, 6-2.
With a 6-2 advantage, the Lancers showed no signs of slowing down after the break, opening the third quarter with three straight points in jumps and tumbling. Vanguard grabbed the quarter's final point, as the Lancers held a comfortable 9-3 lead.
The Lancers put away the Lions in the fourth quarter, winning a point in each of the final nine rounds to secure the 18-5 victory.
Vanessa Copeland was the highest-rated player with a 57, while Madison Murray finished right behind Copeland with a 56.
"This team is something amazing that's coming together against all odds in this difficult year," said Seagondollar. "They have bought into the CBU culture and what we are trying to build here. Our team motto is all in, and these women exemplify the attitude and the willingness to be all in and do their best. I'm looking forward to being able to continue to watch these student-athletes compete and be able to do what they love."
The Lancers will travel to Costa Mesa on Friday, Feb. 19, where these two teams will meet again at 5:30 p.m.
