
Four Pins, Three Majors Lead CBU to Strong Season-Finale Victory over Vanguard

RIVERSIDE – Four pins and three major decision victories led California Baptist University wrestling to a strong 39-9 win over Vanguard in its season finale on Saturday in the Van Dyne Gym.
Dilan Ajtun, Anthony Loera, Caden Gerlach and Evan Bockman all won their matches with falls, while Christian Nunez, Chaz Hallmark and Max Hammond each had major decisions. Josh Grant added CBU's eighth win in the dual on a decision.
CBU won two of its final three duals of the season, as it ended the year with a 2-5 record, while Vanguard suffered its first loss of the season (5-1).
Ajtun got the momentum going for CBU with a pin in just 98 seconds at 125 pounds. Nunez and Hallmark then rattled off back-to-back major decisions on scores of 14-3 and 15-2 at 133 and 141, respectively.
In his first dual start for CBU, Loera got the first-period fall with just 31 seconds left at 149 to up the Lancers' lead to 20-0. Hammond then put up a 15-4 major win at 157 before Grant got a 5-2 decision at 165 to give the Lancers six-straight wins to open the dual.
Gerlach and Bockman then ended the dual with pins at 184 and 197, respectively. Gerlach got his fall in 105 seconds, while Bockman put his opponent's shoulders to the mat 1:08 into the second period.
SENIOR DAY
Saturday also served as Senior Day for the Lancers' lone senior, heavyweight Zach Schrader. He will always be remembered as the first wrestler in CBU history to earn a top-25 ranking in NCAA Division I after FloWrestling ranked him No. 25 at heavyweight last week.
Schrader graduates ranking top-eight in CBU history, with 67 wins and 18 pins in his career. He also holds the NCAA Division I era record with 45 wins and 14 pins the last three years. He has earned two National Collegiate Open All-American finishes the last two seasons, and won the heavyweight title in 2019.
EXTRA, EXTRA
CBU also went 3-0 in extra matches on Saturday. Marcus Peterson (165) and Chris Island (heavyweight) got pins, while Arick Lopez (197) got an 18-1 technical fall. It capped off a perfect 4-0 season for Lopez.
