ST. GEORGE --- The final round of the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational was canceled on Friday due to snow, as the Lancers finished the tournament in third out of 15 teams.
"Disappointed we didn't get to finish the final round, but I saw some grit and amazing attitudes from this TEAM for the 4-6 holes that we did get to play today," said Head Coach Marc Machado. "Conditions were brutal all tournament long, and we now know we can battle and compete in any conditions. This was a great learning experience for us, and I know this will springboard us to more future success as a TEAM. We are very excited about our next tournament hosted by NAU. It's going to be fun."
With the cancelation, the results from day one will stand as the completion of the tournament.
South Dakota State wins the tournament after taking the day-one lead with a 2-over-par 286-292=578. Oral Roberts narrowly edged the Lancers to take second with a 24-over-par 291-309=600. The Lancers finished two strokes behind ORU, finishing with a 26-over-par 297-305=602.
Hailey Loh was the top finisher for the Lancers, taking fifth with a 74-73=147. Samantha Martirez, Sofia Chabon, and Jocelyn Chee all finished inside the top-15 for the Lancers. Martirez signed a 75-76=151 to place T-12th, while Chabon and Chee shot a 151 and finished tied together at 15th. Haruka Shintani signed a 159 to place T-53rd.
Teresa Toscano of South Dakota State earned medalist honors, producing two rounds in the 60's. Toscano shot a 64-67=131 for a 13-under-par. She holds a 13 stroke lead over the field.
The Lancers will travel to Sedona, Arizona, for their next tournament at the Red Rocks Invitational on March 20-21.
