SEDONA --- California Baptist University closed out the final round of the Red Rocks Invitational on Sunday, as the Lancers placed third out of 19 teams.
The Lancers finished the two-day event with a 304-301-296=901 team score as they improved their score in each round. Grand Canyon and Gonzaga tied for first with an 884 team score, but the tiebreaker went to GCU. According to tournament rules, the tiebreaker will be decided by the fifth golfer on each team, and the Lopes player shot a 9-over-par, while the Zags' player shot 10-over-par.
As for the rest of the field, Seattle U finished fourth with a 905 team score, Northern Arizona finished fifth with a 908 team score, Sacramento State finished sixth with a 911 team score, Southern Utah finished seventh with a 915 team score, Illinois State finished eighth with a 919 team score, and Georgia Southern and the University of Idaho rounded out the top 10 at T-9th with a 926 team score.
This marks the Lancers' fourth-straight, top-four finish on the spring season and their third-straight, top-three finish.
"I'm proud of this TEAM for showing consistency all spring semester long. We have had a first, fourth, second, third, and now another third-place finish," said Head Coach Marc Machado. "Taking third place out of a stacked 19 team field is definitely a positive for us, and we look to build off this momentum. I love that freshman Hailey Loh responded best in the final round by shooting even par. She struggled in the first two rounds but still had the heart to fight until the very end. I love that fire inside her. A solid performance for captain Jocelyn Chee and Sofia Chabon with a pair of top-14 finishes in a large field. Sofia has shown up for us in every tourney this spring."
Jocelyn Chee, Sofia Chabon, and Hailey Loh all captured top-20 finishes in the field of 106 golfers. Chee and Chabon placed T-14th with a 225 final score. Loh wasn't too far off her teammates with a 227 to place T-19th. Samantha Martirez finished T-27th with a 230, and Haruka Shintani placed T-31st with a 231. Diana Araneta competed as an individual for the Lancers and placed T-72nd with a 240. Both Chee and Loh were the top finishers for the Lancers in the third round with an even-par 72 on the cards.
Payton Fehringer of GCU won the individual honors, firing an 8-under-par 208.
The Lancers will travel back to Arizona on April 12-13 in the Bobcat Spring Invitational hosted by Montana State at the Golf Club of Estrella.
"We are very excited for Montana State's tourney, but for now, we have a few weeks to practice and get prepared for 'The Next One,'" Coach Machado added.
