Lancers Open Season Against UC Riverside in Crosstown Showdown

RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University women's soccer opened up the season in a Crosstown Showdown against UC Riverside on Saturday, as the Lancers fell to the Highlanders, 2-0.
It marked just the second time the two schools have faced each other on the pitch, as the all-time record moves to 1-1. The Lancers won the previous matchup in the first-ever Crosstown Showdown in a 3-1 showing on Aug. 25, 2019.
The game was steady at the start as both teams battled to control possession and look for any early attacks. Faith Lee rattled off the first shot of the night at the 12-minute mark, but UCR's Cassia Souza was there to make the save.
The Highlanders were able to stay on the attack for most of the first half, as they found the back of the net in the 35th minute. With a 1-0 lead at the break and momentum on its side, UCR came out of the half and scored its second goal six minutes into the second half.
CBU would fight until the final whistle, recording shots in the 82nd, 84th, and 85th minutes. Five Lancers recorded shots on the night, as Jayden Ramirez, Lee, and Erin Gallagher all put theirs on frame.
"Not an easy result to take, especially in a rivalry game," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "We needed to do a better job of controlling the controllables and at the same time evaluate this with proper perspective. This was our first game of the season after only one week of training and no scrimmages due to safety protocols, and it showed. While we're disappointed about the result, there are many positives to take away from this game. We'll learn from this, go back to work, and continue to get better."
UP NEXT:
The Lancers will stay on the road and travel to San Antonio, Texas, to face UTSA on Aug. 26 and Incarnate Word on Aug. 29.
