Lancers Sweep Way to Victory in Home Opener Versus New Orleans

RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University opened its home season in style with a sweep of New Orleans in front of a packed crowd in the Van Dyne Gym on Friday night. The Lancers overwhelmed the Privateers in the 25-21, 25-20, 25-14 win, thanks to a dynamic performance from Christine Graf and an aggressive attack from the service line.
Graf finished with a match-high 13 kills on a .524 hitting percentage (13-2-21) and also had four blocks on the night. CBU finished with 12 aces in all, one off the program's NCAA-era record. Cassidy Dennison provided five of them, while Ashlyn Nevrla and Victoria Goff had two each.
Hana Okuhara collected a match-high 17 assists and seven digs, while Leah Pease had a team-high eight digs and 12 assists. Paige Johnstone had seven digs and five assists, while Dennison also had seven digs. Scherine Dahoue put up eight kills and four digs, as well.
All three sets ended with aces for CBU. Things were tight in set one, with CBU holding a 19-18 lead, but the Lancers closed out the set on a 6-1 run, which was capped off by an ace from Nevrla.
Sydney Marks, who finished with five kills on a .308 percentage (5-1-13), ended the second set with an ace.
CBU's serve really came alive in set three, with eight of them coming in that final game. Tied 11-11, the Lancers turned the game on its head with Dennison back to serve. They ended the match on a 14-3 run, with seven of those points being aces and four of them coming solely from Dennison.
