RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University men's soccer head coach Coe Michaelson has started 2022 by signing an exciting pair of transfers who could make an immediate impact on the pitch. Grand Canyon transfer Maxi Moeller and Mt. SAC product Anthony Vargas will join a Lancer squad that returns the bulk of a roster that secured as many weeks ranked in the Far West Regional poll as WAC Regular Season Champions Grand Canyon, NCAA Championship quarter-finalist Oregon State, and NCAA Championship runner-up Washington.
"We have a fantastic returning group. As young as we have been the past few years, we return a large, experienced group that has grown together through the challenges of an NCAA transition. Most of our roster has never played a home game, so there is so much to be excited about," Michaelson said. "As our facility nears completion and we put the transition behind us, everything we are doing in recruiting is based upon the fact that we are finally postseason eligible. With that in mind, it is all about adding players who make an already talented team better. In Anthony and Maxi, we get two guys who have college championship-winning experience, while the opportunity to integrate them this spring really accelerates the process of adaptation that just isn't possible in a short preseason next fall."
MAXI MOELLER – ERFURT, GERMANY – STRIKER
Moeller comes to Riverside not only with two years of collegiate experience under his belt, but also with no learning curve when it comes to the Western Athletic Conference. The former Grand Canyon forward started 17 games between the spring and fall seasons in 2021, scoring seven goals and assisting six more. He collected quite a few accolades along the way, including WAC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Far West Region.
"Maxi's resume speaks for itself. Proven D-I strikers don't come on the market often, and we had to beat out a lot of top programs to get him to CBU. While we have some top notch returning attackers, he brings something different that will fit in nicely with the others," Michaelson commented. "He is a goal scorer, but at the same time he is unselfish, intelligent and excels in combination play. His character as a person and experience winning at the D-I level will help him contribute, beyond his ability as a player, as we seek to take the next step as a program."
ANTHONY VARGAS – POMONA, CALIF. – MIDFIELD
Vargas, a native Southern Californian, stays home to lend his talent to the Lancers after two seasons with the Mounties. Vargas is a balanced offensive threat having scored six goals and assisted on seven others during his time in Walnut, Calif. Vargas was captain of the 2021 Mountie squad that won the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Championship, the sixth championship in program history, earning it the No. 2 national ranking at the end of the season.
"Anthony is a quick, technical and versatile player who can play a lot of different roles. He fits our style of play as a willing worker who fights for his team defensively, just as he is dangerous and intelligent in possession," detailed Michaelson of his newest midfielder. "He is also a leader in every sense of the word. He sets the example, invests in his teammates, is positive and bought in, and shows character on and off the field. Our staff believes he can be a culture driver for us as we look to build a championship culture here at CBU."
