Lancers Claim Two Victories To Close Out Gary Troyer Tournament

LA VERNE – No. 16 California Baptist University men's water polo team added two more tallies to the win column today, downing Westcliff 23-11 in game one before ending on a high note with a 25-12 win over Mount St. Mary's (Md.).
CBU's record now stands at 12-7 after adding four wins over the past three days between Riverside, Pomona, and La Verne. Joseph Griffin paced the Lancers on offense with a team-high 13 goals during the tournament, edging Matt Olsen who was right there with him at an even dozen.
Angel Sanchez and Cameron Cullen each posting 14 points over the past two days, Sanchez splitting his tally with five goals and nine assists while Cullen had a nearly even split with eight goals and six assists with a monstrous nine steals as well.
Tristan Felberg claimed the majority of minutes between the pipes for CBU, stopping 28 shots on the weekend.
GAME ONE VS WESTCLIFF
The Warriors kept it close in the first half, with the Lancers manahing to take an 11-7 lead into the break. Caleb Teraoka earned a hat trick in the first two quarters, finishing the game with those three goals, one assist, and three steals.
The Lancers dominated the middle periods, outscoring the Warriors 15-4 in the second and third, and closing out the penultimate frame on an 8-0 run. Trevor Begne got the keeper start in game one and posted an impressive .560 save clip in the match, stopping 14 shots in the process.
GAME TWO VS MOUNT ST. MARY'S
The concluding game of the tournament was played against a Mount St. Mary's that came into the day with a strong season record of 9-5. The Mountaineers were unable to keep pace with CBU as three Lancers recorded at least a hat trick during the match.
Cullen polished off a fruitful three-day stretch with another big game, collecting four goals, two assists, and a field block in the finale. Griffin also recorded a quartet of goals, with Olsen also reaching hat trick status with three goals in the game.
Felberg was back in the cage for the start of the final game, notching 16 saves against MSM an throwing in an assist for good measure.
CBU will take a few days to rest before hosting No. 13 UC San Diego on Thursday, Oct. 6. That game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
