BAKERSFIELD--- The Lancers headed to Bakersfield to participate in the Roadrunner Open on Sunday, following a 1-4 start to the season. CBU had an impressive showing in the tournament finishing third in a field of 17 teams in total score and placing five wrestlers in their respective weight classes.
The Lancers had 22 wrestlers participating in the tournament and went up against the likes of Rutgers, Oregon State, and Cal Poly. CBU finished with 9.5 team points which was third overall, with Rutgers having the top team score of the day.
The Lancers finished second in pins with 18 (tied with Oregon State) as a team. Caden Gerlach led the tournament with five pins and finished fourth in the 197 weight division. Teammate Chaz Hallmark finished second with three pins and got fourth place in the 149 division.
Hunter Leake and Peter Acciardi continued their strong seasons with fourth and fifth-place finishes in the 133 and 184 divisions, respectively. Perhaps most impressive was heavyweight Chris Island's performance. Island grabbed second place in the 285 division, pinned his first two opponents, and defeated Oregon State's Charles Hastriter via decision (3-2). Island fell to #31 Boone McDermott of Rutgers in the championship round but secured 13 points for the Lancers.
The Lancers will look to build on this momentum when they participate in the Cliff Keen open in Las Vegas in early December.
