OREM – California Baptist University men's soccer closed out the 2022 regular season by taking on the elevation, the temperatures, and the Utah Valley Wolverines in Orem on Friday. A tight game was eventually claimed by the host squad as UVU scored a pair late to earn the 2-1 win.
"At 1-0, that's a game we probably should have won given the two breakaways we had in the second half. However, we are also keenly aware of the fact that this wasn't our best performance and we have to hold our hands up and acknowledge UVU was very good. They had a lot to play for, knowing they needed a result to make the conference tourney," noted head coach Coe Michaelson after the game. "With that said, we know we will be better, back on our home field next week. We have waited a long time for an opportunity to compete in postseason and we are excited that the time has finally arrived."
The action was Wolverine-heavy for the opening 30 minutes of the first half, with the host side pushing the action. CBU goalkeeper was more than up to the task, making six of his eight game saves in the opening half.

In what can only be described as bad news for the rest of the conference, the returning conference-leading scorer from last season, Bryan Iliohan, found the back of the net for the third time in the past four games in the 38th minute. He is hitting his stride just as the Lancers prepare for their first-ever WAC Tournament run.

The second half saw the same fervor from the Wolverines, who managed to make it count on the scoreboard this time, netting a pair of goals in the 75th and 88th minutes to secure their spot in the WAC tournament.
The Lancers end the regular season with an overall record of 8-6-3 and a 4-3-2 conference tally. Next up for the Blue and Gold is hosting duties. For the first time in program history, the Lancers will host and participate in the WAC men's soccer tournament. The action begins with two games each on November 9 & 11, with the championship match set for November 13.
