Mitchell Mesenbrink and Caden Gerlach Go Undefeated On Opening Day For CBU Wrestling

RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University wrestling opened its season with a home doubleheader dual against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Vanguard University on Saturday. CBU fell in the opener 38-9 to Cal Poly but came out focused in their second match against Vanguard, prevailing 32-6. The Lancers won the match with two falls, one major decision, and five decisions.
Mitchell Mesenbrink and Caden Gerlach won both of their matches on the afternoon. At the same time, teammates Elijah Griffin, Hunter Leake, Christian Nunez, Marcus Peterson, Elijah Sobas, and Christopher Island all took victories in their matchups with Vanguard University.

Mesenbrink, a true freshman for the Lancers, started his Lancers debut with a bang, pinning his Cal Poly opponent in the second period and sealing six points for the Lancers. Mesenbrink followed up his impressive first match with another fall in match two, doing so in under two minutes.
Caden Gerlach also went undefeated on the day with an 8-2 victory against Cal Poly and a 12-7 decision over Vanguard. Gerlach scored all of his points over Cal Poly in the first period with a takedown and 6 total near-fall points to secure the win over his opponent. Gerlach followed it up with two more takedowns against Vanguard to start his season undefeated.
Freshman Elijah Griffin earned CBU's only other fall of the day with a pin against Vanguard, and his teammate Hunter Leake got CBU's lone major with a 10-0 showing against Vanguard in the 133 weight class.
CBU wrestling will continue its season with a trip to Iowa to face the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes on November 12th and 13th.
