LONG BEACH – California Baptist University women's basketball took on Long Beach State on Saturday afternoon, giving The Beach a good fight before falling to the Big West foe 67-59.
Dorcas Wu had her best game of the year so far, posting her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Chloe Webb led the Lancers in the scoring column, pouring in all 14 of her points in the fourth quarter, going 3-3 from the field and 8-8 from the charity stripe, and nabbing five steals. Sila Finau and Nae Nae Calhoun also reached double digits, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Beach came out hot, quickly building a 10-4 in the opening frame. The Lancers' first quarter was helped at the free throw line as CBU went 5-6 from the stripe, helping soften a 3-15 shooting effort to begin the game.
The second quarter saw The Beach cap out at a 15-point lead with just over five minutes to go in the frame. After a CBU timeout, the Lancers locked in and erased the bulk of the deficit, ending the second on an 11-3 run to go into halftime down by six.
Both teams took a while to get going after the break, with Grace Schmidt striking first with 6:54 to go in the period. The Lancers and The Beach combined for just 20 points in the third.
CBU would make a run to start the fourth, opening up the final frame on a 6-2 run to cut the Long Beach lead to four points. Despite going 1-20 in the first three quarters, The Beach would find their rhythm from beyond the arc in the final period, going 3-5 to squash the Lancers' comeback bid with timely deep balls.
The loss drops CBU's record to 2-6 while LBSU pulls even at 3-3. Next up for the Lancers is a return home to host the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. Game time is set for 1 pm on Saturday, December 10.
