
Lancers Go Low In Final Round Of GCU Invitational

PHOENIX --- After darkness halted play in the second round of the GCU Invitational on Monday, California Baptist University provided one of the six under-par team scores during Tuesday's final round.
The 54-hole event finished up on Tuesday as the 23-team field went into the clubhouse on Monday with only a couple of holes left during the second round. California Baptist rebounded quite nicely on the final day, becoming just one of six teams to go low in the final 18 holes of play. The Lancers finished the final round with a 1-under-par 283 team score to finish T-15th out of 23 teams – moving up five spots.
Grand Canyon won its home event with an 18-under-par 834 team score to hold off Fresno State, which climbed up the leaderboard three spots to finish second after an 8-under-par 276 on the day. UT Arlington finished one stroke behind Fresno State in third with a 13-under-par 838 team score.
CBU saw red all day, as all five players combined for 16 birdies during the final round.
Freshman Eeli Kujanpää recorded a team-best four birdies on the day for an even-par to finish with a 2-under-par 71-69-71=211 to take T-17th. John Hayes also signed a 2-under-par 69 in the second round and moved up three spots to finish T-40th after a 2-over-par 74-69-72=215.
Sean Citherlet jumped up 20 spots to finish T-72nd after recording a 7-over-par 79-71-70=220, while James Mackie climbed nine spots to take T-102nd with a 13-over-par 80-76-70=226. Luke Bartram also made a move up the leaderboard to 112th after shooting an 18-over-par 75-83-73=231.
Kyle Cox of UT Arlington held onto his day one lead and went on to claim the individual medalist with an 11-under-par 66-68-68=202. Cox won the individual medalist honors by two strokes.
The Lancers will travel up North in a couple of weeks to take on the Redhawk Invitational on April 4-5 in Seattle, Washington, at Chambers Bay.
