KERRVILLE --- California Baptist University women's golf opened the first round of the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Monday, as Sofia Chabon and Jocelyn Chee posted top-10 scores.
Chabon led the Lancers during the opening round, finishing with a 1-over-par 73 to place fifth, while Chee recorded a 2-over-par 74 to place T-6th. Chabon ended her round with some momentum, playing the last four holes at 1-under-par.
The three-day, 54-hole event is being held at Riverhill Country Club, as the 12 teams are on the par-72 6,196-yard course. With CBU in its final year of the transition process, the Lancers aren't eligible to post a team score in the standings. If they were, they finished with a 17-over-par 305 team score, which is good enough for fourth place.
Hailey Loh ended her day with a top-15 finish at T-13th, as she signed a 5-over-par 77. Filipa Capelo and Haruka Shintani both finished with a 9-over-par 81.
As for the official team scores, NM State finished the first round with a five-stroke lead after an 8-over-par 296 team score. Sam Houston and Seattle U are both tied for second with a 13-over-par 301 team score, while UT Rio Grande Valley is in fourth with an 18-over-par team score.
Siripatsorn Patchana of Grand Canyon, Alison Gastelum of NM State, and Amelia McKee of NM State are all tied for the individual lead with a 1-under-par 71.
The Lancers are set to tee off at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, for the second round of competition.
