KERRVILLE --- California Baptist University women's golf posted the best three-day team score at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday, as the Lancers finished with a 30-over-par 894 total.
The three-day, 54-hole event was held at the Riverhill Country Club, as the 12 teams battled the par-72 and 6,196-yard course. With CBU in its final year of the transition process, the Lancers aren't eligible to post a team score in the official standings. If they were, they would have taken home the trophy after a three-day total of 894.
"This unofficial championship is the best way for this season to end," said Head Coach Marc Machado. "I'm so proud of how consistent this TEAM was all season long, and for them to finally get that W - it shows what can happen when you truly trust the process."NM State claimed the WAC Championship, clinching the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament field, with a 34-over-par 898 to hold off Sam Houston, which placed second with a 37-over-par 901. Seattle U finished the podium in third with a 46-over-par 910 team score.
CBU, ranked No. 117 nationally according to Golfweek, upset four higher ranked teams in Sam Houston (No. 58), Grand Canyon (No. 82), Seattle U (No. 108), and NM State (No. 113).
Prior to the WAC Championships, the Lancers held a .757 winning percentage with a 103-33-1 head-to-head record throughout the season making them one of only 12 NCAA Division I programs in the country with 100+ wins: Eastern Kentucky, Florida, GCU, James Madison, Lipscomb, Michigan, Oregon, San Jose State, Seattle U, Texas A&M, and Wake Forest.
The Lancers recorded three players inside the top-15 and four players inside the top-20, as Hailey Loh mirrored her second round with her second straight 2-under-par 70 on the final day. It marks the third time in her career she has posted a 2-under-par round, taking home third with a 1-over-par 77-70-70=217.
Jocelyn Chee finished the final round with a 1-over-par 73 to place seventh on the day. Chee signed a 5-over-par 74-74-73=221 to claim the top-10 finish. It marks her seventh top-10 finish on the season.
"Also, so much to say about Captain Chee, but I'll keep it short and sweet," Machado said. "She has truly embodied what it means to be a member of the CBU Women's Golf TEAM. She has bought into everything we do, and her legacy will be felt for a long time."
Sofia Chabon wasn't far behind at T-11th with an 11-over-par 73-78-76=227. Haruka Shintani ended her day with a birdie on 18 to finish with a 15-over-par 81-72-78=231 to place T-17th, while Filipa Capelo carded a 20-over-par 81-78-79=236 to finish T-28th.
Siripatsorn Patchana of Grand Canyon held onto her day two lead with a 3-under-par 71-71-71=213 to win the individual medalist by three strokes over the field.
"This week was a total TEAM effort," added Machado. "Every player had a score that counted, and I saw true heart and grit in how every round was finished. We fought, battled, and clawed our way whenever any obstacle came our way. There is no quit in this squad."
