BOULDER CITY --- California Baptist University men's golf team teed it up at the Western Athletic Conference Championship on Monday, as the Lancers had three players finish inside the top-15.
Eeli Kujanpää led the way for the Lancers during the opening round, finishing with a 1-under-par 71 to place T-7th, while Luke Bartram and Sean Citherlet placed T-11th with a pair of even-par 72's on the card.
The three-day, 54-hole event is being held at Boulder Creek Golf Club, as the 12 teams are playing on the par-72 7,482-yard course. With CBU in its final year of the transition process, the Lancers aren't eligible to post a team score in the standings. If they were, they finished the first day with a 4-over-par 292 team score, which is good enough to tie Grand Canyon at fourth.
James Mackie and John Hayes both ended their days with a 5-over-par 77 on the scorecard to sit at T-39th.
As for the official team scores, Sam Houston opened up the tournament with a 4-under-par 284 team score to hold a five-stroke advantage over the field. NM State is in second with a 1-over-par 289 team score, while Abilene Christian is in third with a 3-over-par 291 team score.
Alex Clouse of Abilene Christian is the day one leader after firing a 4-under-par 68 to take a one-stroke advantage into the clubhouse.
The Lancers are set to tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, for the second round of competition.
