CBU Collects 30th Win of the Season Against Grand Canyon
5/6/2022 10:33:00 PM | Softball
CBU moves to 30-25 on the year and 12-11 in the Western Athletic Conference standings, currently owning sole possession of third place in the West. GCU moves to 35-13 this season with an 18-5 league record, and is currently tied for the top seed on the conference with Stephen F. Austin, which also split a doubleheader on Friday.
Three Lancers recorded multiple hits on Friday, but Maile Olsen led the pack, going 3-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI. Katelyn Mangrello and Nicole Stark both had two-hit nights with Mangrello also recording her 30th RBI of the season. Alyssa Argomaniz returned to her winning ways in the circle, earning her 11th victory of the season in game two.
GAME ONE
The Lopes were ready from the jump, taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a one out home run to straight away center. The Lancer bats struggled to get going until the bottom of the fourth inning came around when CBU collected four hits on their way to tying the game. An Amanda Argomaniz double brought in pinch runner Michaila Harrington and two batters later, Olsen singled sharply up the middle to even the score.

The Lopes responded swiftly and decisively, scoring four runs in the next half-inning to build a four-run lead, and tacked on one more for good measure in the top of the seventh to reach the final score. CBU would manage just two hits and a walk after the fourth inning.
Jordan Schuring had been lights out in the circle lately for CBU and earned the game one starting nod. Unfortunately, she was unable to keep the hot streak going, lasting just 0.1 innings after allowing two earned, three hits, and two walks to begin the game. Jazmine Castaneda would relieve Schuring and shutdown the inning, but GCU would figure her out the second time through the lineup and tag her for the big fifth inning and the loss.
GAME TWO
The Lancers flipped the script in game two, allowing no hits in the top of the first and scoring a pair in the bottom half of the inning to take command of the contest. An error and a free pass fielder's choice put the first two Lancer hitters on without much hassle, leading to a run being scored on an error before GCU could record an out. Sydney Soto then sent one into the grass in right field, scoring Olsen and putting a two-spot on the board for the home team.

The Lopes would put a runner on in each of the next three innings, but failed to make them count. Mangrello would extend the Lancer lead in the bottom of the fifth, singling through the left side and scoring Samantha Demyon easily from second to make it a 3-0 game.

The Lopes would get one back in the top of the sixth inning, but back-to-back putouts by Demyon in center field halted the rally before it could start. Argomaniz wouldn't allow a hit in the top of the seventh, securing the victory to close out Friday night's action.
