SB PREVIEW: Lancers Square Off with Grand Canyon In Season Finale
5/3/2022 2:09:00 PM | Softball
RIVERSIDE – Fresh off a series sweep over NM State, California Baptist University softball is locked in on closing out the 2022 season on a high note. The Lancers have already clinched a winning record for the season with a 29-24 overall record with just three games left to play, but the squad has goals of toppling the West Division champions, Grand Canyon, before all is said and done.
A hugely successful trip to Las Cruces has the Lancers riding high, currently owning a five-game win streak, the longest in the conference heading into the final weekend. Leading the charge against the Aggies was senior first baseman Amanda Argomaniz, who was named Western Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week after recording a .727 batting average (8-11), with five runs batted in, three runs scored, and a home run. Argomaniz is in the midst of her best season as a Lancer, posting career-highs in starts (50), batting average (.277), RBI's (25), and walks (15) while also recording her first career triple.
Jordan Schuring owned the circle for CBU during the last series, going 2-0 with a save while allowing just 10 hits in 13 innings, striking out eight with just one walk given. Schuring now sits with the third-best season ERA in the conference, 2.37. Teammate Alyssa Argomaniz remains among the WAC's best pitchers as her 2.45 ERA sits just behind Schuring on the conference list, while her four saves are tops in the league, and 99 strikeouts rank fifth among all pitchers.
SERIES INFORMATION
Opponent: Grand Canyon Lopes
Dates/Times: Friday, May 6 (4 & 6:30 p.m.) | Saturday, May 7 (5 p.m.)
Location: Riverside, Calif. (John C. Funk Stadium)
Video (WDN): Games 1 & 2 | Game 3
Live Stats: Game 1 | Game 2 | Game 3
Grand Canyon dropped its most recent series to Dixie State, but the game three win over the Trailblazers clinched their first WAC regular-season title since 2017. The Lopes are currently deadlocked with Stephen F. Austin for the top seed in the WAC tournament as both teams own a 17-4 WAC record, so GCU will have plenty to play for this weekend in Riverside.
The Lopes lead the conference in most offensive categories but have cracked the national top-20 ranks in four classifications. The Lopes are second in the country when it comes to stolen bases per game, averaging 2.50 swipes per contest, just 0.08 behind Maryland for the number one spot. Gianna Nicoletti, who leads the Lopes with 48 thefts, is second individually in the NCAA, two behind Alexis Johns from South Florida.
GCU also ranks highly in the nation with a .335 team batting average (No. seven), a .401 on-base percentage (No. 16), and 6.48 runs per game (No. 17). Of the 17 major statistical categories that the NCAA tracks, the Lopes lead the WAC in 10 of them and are second or third in four. There is one statistic the Grand Canyon ranks last in among all WAC teams, walks taken, seeing ball four just 105 times in 1,406 plate appearances.
