CHICAGO – Former California Baptist University baseball ace pitcher Tyson Miller made his third Major League Baseball appearance and debut with the Texas Rangers on Friday night.
Miller made a strong first impression with the Rangers, as he brought into a one-run game against the Chicago White Sox in the bottom of the fourth inning. Miller threw 2.1 innings in which he did not allow an earned run.
CBU has a strong track record of success in professional baseball. A total of 23 Lancer pitchers have signed on with MLB teams over the last 18 years under Coach Gary Adcock. In all, the Lancers have produced 32 total MLB signees (25 draft picks, seven free-agent signings) in Adcock's tenure.
Friday was a whirlwind day for Miller. He was called up from the Triple-A Round Rock Express earlier in the day, with Texas officially announcing the move at 1:24 p.m. Pacific. Less than five hours later, he was on the mound for the Rangers in Chicago.
After a leadoff single to Jose Abreu, Miller retired six-straight White Sox batters and helped Texas take a 2-1 lead after it scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings. He was relieved in the sixth after a walk, two stolen bases and an error allowed Chicago to tie the game, 2-2. The White Sox earned the 8-3 win when all was said and done.
Miller is the highest draft pick in program history after the Chicago Cubs selected him in the fourth round in 2016, and is the second Lancer to appear in MLB game. This season in the minors, he has a 2-3 record, 5.02 earned-run average, 1.54 WHIP and 50 strikeouts in 37.2 innings spread over 12 appearances and four starts.
Over three seasons at CBU, Miller was a two-time all-conference selection in the PacWest and three-time NCAA Division II All-West Region pick. To this day, he ranks third in Lancer history with 237 career strikeouts, fifth in wins (23) and innings pitched (272.1) and seventh with a 2.71 ERA.
