Lancers Welcome Record Crowd On Opening Night Against CSUN

RIVERSIDE --- California Baptist University women's soccer opened its season with a record-breaking crowd on Saturday night, as the Lancers hosted CSUN for the 2022 opener.
Lancer Nation gathered under the lights at the newly built CBU Soccer Stadium to the tune of 651 fans, setting a new all-time attendance record for the Lancers. CBU's previous attendance record was set against Grand Canyon on Oct. 20, 2019, with 369 fans.
The first-ever matchup between the Lancers and the Matadors was a battle for the entire 90 minutes, as CSUN scored two goals in the second half to come away with the 2-1 victory.
The Lancers controlled most of the game, outshooting the Matadors, 24-12, but were unable to find the back of the net despite having nine shots on goal.
Midway through the first half, a handball by the Matadors inside the box awarded the Lancers a penalty kick. Ari Coronado stepped up for the Lancers and delivered a shallow strike that bounced off Matadors' keeper Taylor Thames. Coronado moved forward and secured the rebound to the top right side of the net for the Lancers' first goal of the season.
CBU went into the break with a 1-0 lead and an 8-6 advantage in shots.
CSUN didn't waste too much time in the second half finding the equalizer, though, as Cindy Arteaga tied the matchup with a goal at the 61st minute. Five minutes later, CSUN's Ashley Cruz was able to break away on a 1-v-1 to find the go-ahead goal at the 66th minute.
The Lancers were relentless in their pursuit to knot the game up after the Matador goals, as CBU produced five shots on frame in the final 20 minutes of action. Morgan Witz had a late opportunity at the 83rd minute, but Thames would record her eighth save of the match.
Lourdes Bosch finished the game as the Lancers' leading shot taker with seven, while Coronado recorded six and a team-best three on goal.
UP NEXT
The Lancers will hit the road next week for their lone nonconference road trip with games against Bryant on Aug. 25 and Merrimack on Aug. 28.
