RIVERSIDE--- A defensive duel was on display at CBU Soccer Stadium on Thursday evening as the California Baptist women's soccer team welcomed Weber State University to Riverside. Eighty-nine minutes of the match were pure defense from both sides, but an early second-half goal would ultimately secure the win for the visiting program. The Lancers drop to 4-5-1 on the season and are now 3-1 at home this year.
A scoreless first half was highlighted by an offensive onslaught from the visiting team, requiring Mikayla O'Brien to show out between the sticks for the Lancers. The CBU goalkeeper tallied seven saves through the first half, but her impressive night would be marred by a quick second-half goal for the Wildcats. The visiting squad found the back of the net just 23 seconds into the second half and would carry their lead through the rest of the match. CBU's best chance of the evening was ruled offside after Nikki Mau tapped in a loose ball off a free kick for the Lancers, stifling the CBU comeback.
The squads went 15 for 15 on shots, but the Wildcats managed to put four more on frame during the 90 minutes. Ava Westlund was the driving force behind the Lancer attack, totaling seven shots on the evening.
California Baptist will have an off weekend in preparation for Western Athletic Conference play to begin next Thursday, as the squad will play host to Abilene Christian at 7 p.m.
