RIVERSIDE – California Baptist University men's water polo heads into the 2022 season ranked 13th in the nation after the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released its Preseason NCAA Top 20 Poll on Wednesday.
It's the Lancers' second-best preseason ranking in the NCAA, and also marks the third year in row they've been ranked in the top-14. CBU's best-ever preseason ranking was in 2020-21 when it was selected 11th overall, although several teams had dropped out of competition by that point due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Western Water Polo Association also picked CBU to finish third in the conference's preseason poll of the nine teams. UC Davis is the preseason favorite with 64 points and eight first-place votes. UC San Diego checks in second with 53 points and the other first-place vote. The Lancers amassed 49 points, which was one ahead of Loyola Marymount (48). Santa Clara (33), Air Force (32), Concordia (21), Fresno Pacific (14) and Biola (10) round out the conference poll.
California Baptist is coming off a 2021 campaign where it reached the WWPA Championship game and finished up with a 20-14 record and ranked 13th in the NCAA. The Lancers also won the WWPA title and became the first team in school history to qualify for the NCAA Championships during the COVID-19 shortened 2020-21 season.
The new campaign begins this weekend at Brown University's Fall Classic. The Lancers will play five games over two days against fifth-ranked Pacific, No. 19 Brown and Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 3 and MIT and 16th-ranked Harvard on Sunday, Sept. 4.
