
CBU Starts Season Strong with Two Wins at Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE – California Baptist University men's water polo opened the 2022 season with a tripleheader at the Bruno Classic at Brown University.
The Lancers won two of their games, including their first ranked win of the year over No. 19 Brown on a score of 13-12. CBU also broke the program's record for goals in a game in a 27-4 win over Connecticut College after dropping a 16-7 game to fifth-ranked Pacific to start the season.
Thirteenth-ranked CBU opens the season with a 2-1 record, while Pacific is 1-0, Brown is 1-1 and Connecticut is 0-2.
Angel Sanchez led CBU's offense with 10 points on six assists and four goals on the day. Three Lancers: Caleb Teraoka, Matt Olsen and true freshman Logan Puhl tied with a team-high five goals on the day.
Tristan Felberg had 16 saves and two steals over three games. Teraoka and Cameron Cullen also contributed defensively with five steals each on the day.
Olsen recorded the first goal and hat trick of the season in game one for CBU against Pacific. Teraoka also had a goal and assist, while Cullen and Joseph Starr had three steals.
It was a balanced effort in the win against Brown, with Sanchez, Teraoka, Joseph Griffin, Thomas de Wit and Puhl all scoring twice in the one-goal victory. Felberg was huge in the cage with 10 saves, including multiple five-meter blocks, and two steals. Sanchez also dropped in four assists for a six-point effort.
Sanchez scored what wound up being the game-winner in the final two-and-a-half minutes against Brown. It gave CBU a 13-10 lead with 2:22 left in regulation but the Bears cut the deficit to one, 13-12, with 1:55 to go. The Lancers came up with a key steal in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
It was all CBU in the final game of the day against the Connecticut Camels, as the Lancers raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Marcus Lodewyk and Toring Stanley each had hat tricks and at least six points in the win. Sanchez, Teraoka, Ian Escoto, de Wit, Puhl and Jacob Sill all had two goals each, as well.

CBU continues the Bruno Classic with two more games on Sunday, Sept. 4, against MIT and No. 16 Harvard at 5 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively. The Lancers will play week two of the season close to home at the Inland Empire Classic on Sept. 10-11 hosted by the University of Redlands.
