CBU Adds Another Win to Wrap Up Bruno Classic

CAMBRIDGE – Thirteenth-ranked California Baptist University men's water polo tacked on another win on the final day of the Bruno Classic at Harvard's Blodgett Pool on Sunday.

The Lancers defeated MIT by a score of 19-8 and fell to the 16^th-ranked Crimson on the road, 12-9. CBU ends the first week of the season with a 3-2 record, while Harvard is 3-1 and MIT begins 1-3.

Joseph Griffin scored a hat trick in both games and finished with eight goals overall on Sunday after he put up five against MIT.

Griffin went off for five goals on six shots in the win over MIT. Ian Escoto tallied a team-high eight points in the win on six assists, two goals and a steal. True freshman Logan Puhl logged his first career hat trick with three goals and an assist. Cameron Cullen, Caleb Teraoka (two assists) and Bodhi Bowden each scored twice.

The Lancers jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the game before the Engineers cut the deficit down to one, 5-4, with 1:19 left in the first half. CBU did away with any dramatics with a 6-0 run that spanned the end of the second quarter to halfway through the third quarter to give the Lancers an 11-4 lead with 12-and-a-half minutes to play in regulation.

CBU held an 8-7 lead in the fourth quarter against Harvard, but the Crimson used a 5-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull out the win and was aided by three penalty-shot opportunities over the final six minutes.

The Lancers will play week two of the season close to home at the Inland Empire Classic on Sept. 10-11 hosted by the University of Redlands. CBU will face Whittier and Occidental on Saturday, Sept. 10 and Chapman and Redlands on Sunday, Sept. 11.
