POMONA – No. 16 California Baptist University men's water polo split a pair of games on the opening day of the Gary Troyer Tournament, hosted by Pomona-Pitzer College. The day began with a near upset after pushing No. 9 UC Irvine to overtime with the Anteaters edging the Lancers 19-17. That was later followed by a dominant 25-11 victory over Ottawa (AZ). The split pushes CBU's season record to 10-7 on the year.
GAME ONE VERSE #9 UC IRVINE
The Lancers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the Anteaters, but Irvine would storm back to level the first period at six each. The 'Eaters would take a two goal advantage into halftime after a strong second period.
The Lancers flexed their muscles after halftime, outscoring UCI 4-1 to claim a 13-12 lead heading into the final frame of regulation. A tightly contested fourth period saw Irvine score two unanswered with time running out, but Caleb Teraoka's power play goal with just 98 seconds left forced extra time.
Despite a trio of magnificent goals from the Lancers in the two overtime periods, the result would eventually land in favor of Irvine.
GAME TWO VERSE OTTAWA (AZ)
The Lancers put game two away early, closing out the first eight minutes with an 11-4 lead. They would continue to build on that advantage every quarter, never allowing the Spirit to score more than four goals in any single frame.
Joseph Griffin led the charge offensively on day one, scoring eight total goals between the two games. Matt Olsen was not far behind with six goals, and Teraoka up there with eight points (five goals an three assists).
Tristan Felberg got the start in the cage in both games, handling keeper duty for nine of the ten periods of play. He stopped 12 shots in 62 minutes of action, adding an assist and a steal against the Anteaters.
The Lancers will close out the tournament on Saturday with two more games, first taking on Westcliff at 9 a.m. before finishing up with Mount Saint Mary at 2:20 p.m. Both games will be played at the La Verne Aquatics Center.
