Lancers Take on the #23 Cardinal, Griffin and Acciardi Come Away Victorious

PALO ALTO--- The Lancers traveled up to Palo Alto to take on the Stanford Cardinal, who ranked 23rd in the Intermat rankings and fell just outside the top 25 in the NWCA Coaches poll. The Cardinal featured four ranked wrestlers, including two in the top 15 in their respective weight classes. Stanford came into the match at 1-2, with their losses coming to top 20 opponents in Rutgers and Virginia Tech. The Cardinal fended off the Lancers by a score of 36-7.
The Lancers started slow but picked up steam, with Peter Acciardi and Elijah Griffin taking home their matches. Chris Island went the distance in the heavyweight clash but was taken down late in the third period and lost in a 3-1 decision.
Acciradi continued his solid season with a 5-1 decision victory over Jack Darrah of Stanford. The Buffalo transfer had takedowns in the match and fended off several attacks from his Cardinal opponent. Caden Gerlach had one of the most challenging assignments of the dual facing off against #22 Nick Stemmet. Gerlach grabbed a pair of reversals on his ranked opponent but was ultimately pinned in the second period.
Griffin again put forth the most impressive performance of the match with a dominant 11-2 major decision victory over #15 Nico Provo. Griffin owned the mat from the start, put together an incredible five minutes of riding time, and had four takedowns. Griffin is no stranger to defeating ranked wrestlers, as this was the third time he has done so.

The Cardinal earned three pins and a technical fall in the match to secure the 36-7 victory in the first part of their double dual.
