LITTLE ROCK, AK--- The California Baptist women's golf program secured their first team win of the 2023 fall season on Tuesday morning in Little Rock, Arkansas. The Lancers scored a program-low 838 team score across the three-day Diamante Intercollegiate event, capping off the tournament with another strong showing from freshman Pusanisa Ekkantrong.
"The team's remarkable achievement of winning this event while shattering our 36 and 54-hole program records is a testament to their unity and dedication," remarked skipper Marc Machado. "All five members consistently showed up and contributed to every round, embodying our shared message and theme this week, to be bold on every shot and situation."
Samantha Dizon started the first round strong with a 6-under-par finish to land her in first after Sunday. Ekkantrong carded a 2-under (70) mark, and Sofia Chabon ended the first round with an even 72 score. Ekkantrong continued to shoot low and shot a 5-under (72) that guaranteed her a spot in the top five standings. Chabon finished with a 2-under-par mark, and Dizon scored a 71 to also earn a place in the top five standings.
Tuesday's final round proved to be the Lancer's best day on the course as every member carded an under-par score. Burberry Zhang led the way with a 6-under par finish and tied Dizon for the lowest single-round score in program history. Chabon totaled a 68 final-round score, while Damini Law Ghanshyani, Ekkantrong, and Dizon all scored a 1-under (71) to finish the day.
Dizon and Ekkantrong finished tied for third out of 96 golfers, while Chabon grabbed another top-10 finish in ninth. Zhang carded a 14th-place finish, and Ghanshyani placed in 49th. The Lancers close out the fall season with three top-five finishes, and the Diamante Intercollegiate marks Machado's 19th team win during his time with California Baptist, as well as the program's sixth Division I team tournament win.
"Today is a great day to be a CBU Lancer," continues Machado. "This moment truly reflects the commitment of these young ladies buying into what this team stands for and also shows their continued efforts to strengthen our program's united, team-first culture."
The Lancers close out the fall season with two individual tournament wins courtesy of Chabon and Ekkantrong and will now begin preparations for championship season beginning in the Spring. CBU will tune-up with an outing at the Ryder Cup against California State Fullerton before kicking off the spring season at the San Diego State Classic.
