10/7/2023 10:05:00 PM | Men's Water Polo
RIVERSIDE - California Baptist University men's water polo finished a perfect Joust tournament with two more big victories on Saturday. They began the day topping Westcliff 19-10 before dominating the tournament finale with a 26-7 decision over Toronto. CBU is back over .500 on the season at 13-12 after winning five straight at home this weekend.
Logan Puhl stood out this weekend, recording nine goals and five assists during the tournament, posting at least one goal and an assist in each game. Marcus Lodewyk matched Puhl's game-in-and-game-out effort, totaling six goals seven assists with a whopping seven steals. Toring Stanley also put up huge numbers with nine goals and six assists.
GAME ONE: #15 CBU 19 - WESTCLIFF 10
The day began with a tilt against the reigning NAIA national champions, Westcliff Warriors, who seemed to be out to prove a point. The Warriors opened the scoring and kept it within one goal for the entire first half. The Lancers would have six players score their seven first-half goals, including a pair from Cameron Cullen.
CBU would net four of the first five scores of the second half to begin building a lead. Cullen would complete his hat trick during that stretch. The Lancers would round into form quickly after that, outscoring WU 12-4 in the third and fourth periods.
GAME TWO: #15 CBU 26 - TORONTO 7
The tournament finale against the Toronto Varsity Blues would prove to be an offensive showcase for CBU, culminating in the Lancers' highest point total of the season. A total of 15 Lancers would make their way into the scoring column, with more than half of them doing so multiple times.
Puhl, Toby Bumgardner, and Stanley would all record hat tricks in the contest, with Stanley posting a matching trio of assists to go with his hatty. The Lancers left no doubt from the opening whistle, jutting out to an 8-1 lead in the opening frame. They would go up 22-7 by the start of the fourth when they locked down on the Varsity Blues and blanked them in the final frame.
The Lancers have a hard-earned light work week coming up, not to be misconstrued as an easy week. CBU is slated for just one match next week, a road conference match-up against the currently 12-ranked Pacific in Stockton. The Lancers will head north for their 3:00 p.m. tilt on Saturday, Oct. 14th.
