RIVERSIDE--- The California Baptist University wrestling team competed in its first conference dual as they battled the Wyoming Cowboys. The Cowboys took seven of the ten matches and took the dual 28-12.
The Lancers defeated the Cowboys last season in Laramie for their first-ever BIG-12 dual win since moving to the conference. This time around, the Lancers came away with just three match victories by way of Mateo De La Pena, Hunter Leake, and Carter Schubert.

CBU begins its season 0-2, while the Cowboys improved to 2-0 after opening their season with a win over Western Wyoming.
The dual started at 165 lbs, with De La Pena, matched up against Brett McIntosh of Wyoming. Mateo got to work early, earning a pin over McIntosh 47 seconds into the match and securing six quick points for the Lancers.

Wyoming answered back with a pair of decisions in the 174 and 184 lb weight classes to knot the dual at six points apiece. Eli Sheeren and Joseph Novak battled it out in the 197 bout, exchanging takedowns and subsequent escapes in the first period. The second period only saw one point via a Sheeren escape as the two battled through the two minutes. Exhaustion set in for both wrestlers, but Sheeren's got the better of him as Novak produced the pin and six points for the Cowboys to take the lead in the team score.

A Cowboy decision and pin in the next two matches gave Wyoming complete control of the dual as the lead ballooned to 12. Leake got the Lancers back on the board with a 2-1 decision over his opponent, registering his points in the third period. The Lancers would close out the dual strong with a 2-0 decision by true freshman Carter Schubert in the 157 lb bout, giving Shubert his first collegiate win and a 1-0 record to start his career.
