Lancers Secure First Dual Victories of 2023-24 with Doubleheader Sweep

COSTA MESA – California Baptist University wrestling swept a dual doubleheader with dominant victories over Embry-Riddle (35-10) and Vanguard (47-7) on Friday at Vanguard. The Lancers improve their record to 2-2 on the year with the results.
Elijah Griffin (125 pounds), Nathan Haas (184), Eli Sheeren (197) and Chris Island (285) all posted bonus-point victories in both of their matches on Friday, with Island pinning both of his opponents.
EMBRY-RIDDLE
Six of the Lancers' seven bout wins counted for bonus points against Embry-Riddle, as CBU took control early with a 17-0 lead three matches in after pins from Griffin and Darren Green at 125 and 141 pounds, respectively, sandwiched around a 17-1 technical fall from Hunter Leake at 133.
Island (285) and Haas (184) notched a pin and tech, as well, while Sheeren (197) recorded a major decision. Chaz Hallmark produced CBU's seventh and final win of the dual with a shutout, 5-0 decision at 157 pounds.
VANGUARD
CBU won eight of 10 matches over Vanguard to end the day, with five pins, two technical falls and a forfeit producing the lopsided result. Nolan Miller-Johnstone (157), Mateo De La Pena (165), Haas, Sheeren and Island all won with falls, while Griffin and Justin Phillips (174) secured technical falls.
California Baptist will take a breather before heading to its first tournament of the season at Bakersfield's Roadrunner Open on Sunday.
