ATHENS, GEORGIA – Lancer softball continued its southern swing today in the Georgia Classic, hosted by the 17th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. The Lancers completed three games on Saturday, earning a 3-2 win against Lipscomb before dropping the resumed game from Friday against Georgia, 1-0, and the scheduled second game against the Bulldogs, 9-0.
Priscilla Estrada hit safely in all three games, pushing her team-leading streak to six games in a row. Samantha Demyon continued her clutch-hitting prowess by knocking in her team-leading eighth RBI of the season.
GAME ONE: CBU 3 – LIPSCOMB 2
The first game of Saturday began with an RBI triple from the Bison to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. CBU starter Morgan McConnell would respond with strength, not allowing a hit to the next ten LU hitters.
Presley Hosick would enter for McConnell with one out and runners on second and third in the top of the fourth. A fielder's choice would plate one, but a caught stealing and a groundout stopped the attempted rally.
Facing a two-run deficit and still searching for their first hit of the morning, the Lancers found their groove at the plate. Sydney Soto singled to center, setting up Deja Westbrook to tie the game with one swing, which she did with her second homer of the season over the left field wall.
Lipscomb got one on in the fifth but couldn't make anything happen, leaving the door open for CBU to take the lead. Priscilla Estrada singled to left and took second on a ground out but was facing two outs from second base. Karmyna Becerra would walk, creating forceout opportunities at every base for the Bison, but Samantha Demyon's streak of clutch hits continued as she singled to the opposite field, scoring Estrada to take the final lead of the game.
It was never in doubt as Hosick earned the win and didn't allow a hit for the next two innings to secure the 3-2 win over the Bison.
GAME ONE: GEORGIA 1 – CBU 0
The Lancers and Bulldogs actually began play on Friday the 24th, but an extended rain delay forced a halt to game one in the top of the fifth with one out. Prior to the suspension of play, Georgia had manufactured one run in the bottom of the second to take a slim 1-0 lead. The Lancers had scattered three hits in the four-plus innings of play but were still looking to capitalize on the opportunities.
When play resumed, Estrada was up to bat with one out, a fortunate circumstance as Estrada is the natural leadoff hitter who was coming off a hit in her final at-bat against Lipscomb. She came through with a single to right but would later be caught stealing, followed by a flyout from Natalie Elias to end the inning that had started 16 hours before.
The Lancers would connect on pitches in the sixth and seventh innings, but not cleanly enough to start a rally. Alyssa Argomaniz got the hard luck complete game loss after allowing five hits and just one run.
GAME THREE: GEORGIA 9 – CBU 0 (6)
The third game saw Georgia come out of the gate flexing their #17 muscles, posting four runs in the opening frame. They would add two more in the third and three in the bottom of the sixth to end the game at 9-0.
Estrada and Soto each knocked a hit in the game, but the Bulldog defense was not letting anything else past them in game two.
The Lancers will close out the Georgia Classic on Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. Pacific time against the Pride of Hofstra University.
