Softball Closes Out Georgia Classic against Hofstra
2/26/2023 9:38:00 AM | Softball
ATHENS – California Baptist University softball closed out the Georgia Classic against Hofstra early Sunday morning, taking it to extra innings but unable to get the win as Hofstra prevailed 6-5 in eight innings.
The Pride built a 4-0 lead after the third inning, but the Lancers responded by scoring in four of the next five frames. Kayla Lyon recorded her second RBI on her second hit of the season to post CBU's first run in the fourth. In the fifth, back-to-back RBI singles from Karmyna Becerra, and Deja Westbrook got the Lancers within one run.
The sixth inning was quiet before Becerra got the jump on the Pride pitcher again, ringing up her fourth career triple and scoring Westbrook to tie the game at four-all. Amanda Bricker came through in the top of the eighth with an RBI single on the first pitch she saw, scoring Westbrook from second to take the lead.
The Pride showed patience late in the game, working three walks in the bottom of the eighth to go with one hit, which ultimately made the difference in the game as Hofstra scored twice to end the affair.
CBU returns to California with a 6-9 record and will remain on the road for one more game, traveling to San Diego to take on the Toreros on Wednesday, March 1, with a scheduled first pitch at 5:30.
