CBU Opens West Regionals with a Pair of Top-20 Finishes

SACRAMENTO--- Day one of the NCAA West Regionals kicked off in Sacramento, with California Baptist University competing in the event for the first time since becoming eligible this season. The Lancers had a solid start to their West Regionals debut with a pair of top-20 finishers in the men's 10K.
In a loaded event, Valentin Soca, Matias Reynaga, and Arturs Medveds were the Lancer's competitors. 13 of the 20 fastest runners in the nation competed in the west region, including runners from Stanford and Tulsa. Soca was the highest-ranking Lancer in the event with the 21st fastest time in the West Region at 28:34.34, which he set at the Stanford Invitational.
Medveds and Soca had strong races and finished within ten seconds of each other in 16th and 17th place, respectively. Medveds was the 16th-place finisher and set a new personal best at 28:45.67. The new PB for Medveds was the fifth-fastest time in program history and was eight seconds faster than his previous best, which he set at the Steve Scott Invitational. Medveds came into the race as the 42nd-ranked runner and, with his 16th-place finish, outperformed that number by 24 spots.
Soca came in 17th at 28:45.77, his second-fastest 10K of the season, placing him sixth in program history. Soca was the 21st fastest runner in the west region coming in and outperformed that figure by four sports with his 17th place finish.
Reynaga was the final Lancer to cross the finish line at 31st place. Reynaga ran 29:22.20 in the race, his third-fastest mark of the season and 11th fastest time in program history. Reynaga also outperformed his starting seed which was 38.
Next, Yasna Petrova will compete in the women's 10K on Thursday, May 25th, at 9:10 p.m.
