St. Clair Notches 200th Win After Crosstown Showdown Victory

RIVERSIDE, CA--- California Baptist University's women's soccer team opened the 2023-2024 athletic year on Thursday night with the infamous Crosstown Showdown against UC Riverside. After being tied 1-1 at the half, the Lancers surged past the Highlanders with three second-half goals to snag their first win of the year.
Last season, UCR came to the CBU, and the squads battled to a 3-3- tie and solidified a 1-1-1 record against each other. Ready to handle some unfinished business, the Lancers pressed early, earning a free kick in the first ten minutes of the match. McKenna Ray lofted the ball over the penalty kick spot, and Jana Heinen headed it just wide in the Lancer's first opportunity of the half. After generating several creative offensive attacks, Lourdes Bosch took the ball herself up the field and fired a shot just left of the goal.
Ray was also making big plays on defense, including several slide tackles in the corner to stop the Highlander's chances at a goal. UCR did manage to break through the Lancer's defense after slipping a ball across the right side of the backline for a finish in the back of the net to take the lead in the 22nd minute. CBU continued to press and produced a few opportunities, including a shot by Taylor Summit saved by the UCR keeper.
Marcella Brooks dropped a corner kick into the six-yard box in the last minute of the first half, and after battling traffic in the box, Frida Murrieta placed the ball into the right side of the Highlander's net to tie the match just before halftime.
Bosch came up big in the 58th minute after taking a free kick just outside the 18-yard box and bending the ball around the wall perfectly into the top shelf of the UCR goal for a 2-1 Lancer lead, opening the floodgates for CBU. Natalia Castro scored her first CBU goal just 15 minutes later after battling in chaos in the box off a corner kick, placing it low into the net.
Fighting down the left sideline in the 80th minute, Morgan Witz bested a Highlander and got her foot on the ball to force the action back to the top of the 18-yard box. Malia Cerdon slotted a perfect ball across the UCR backline, and Murrieta placed it into the top right corner for her second goal of the night.
The Lancers totaled 18 shots, with eight being on frame, while UCR tallied just three shots through the 90 minutes. The 4-1 win against the Highlanders marks head coach Kristen St. Clair's 200th win at California Baptist, making her the winningest soccer coach in CBU history.
"Opening the season with a crosstown rivalry win that also marked my 200th win is very special," remarks St. Clair. "I'm proud of our team's grit and resilience. We didn't start the game as sharp as we would have liked, but we made the necessary adjustments and executed much better in the second half".
The Lancers return to CBU Soccer Stadium next Thursday, August 24th, at 7 PM for their 2023 home opener against the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
