Chabon Earns First Collegiate Individual Win at Payne Stewart Memorial

SPRINGFIELD, MO--- Sofia Chabon opened her fifth year as a Lancer with an individual tournament win, the first in her career. Chabon shot under par every round of the Payne Stewart Memorial, rounding out the two-day competition by going eight-under for a first-place finish. CBU ended the day in third place as a team with a score of 880, starting their year on a high note.
Chabon started the tournament well, ending her first round with five birdies and a score of 1-under (71). Freshman and newest Lancer, Pusanisa Ekkantrong also started the day well after shooting even during her first round, while Damini Law Ghanshyani opened the tournament also going one-under par.
The tournament was played at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri, which boasted four challenging holes, including the fifth, seventh, tenth, and eighteenth. During the second round, Chabon earned a birdie on the 18th hole for a four-under-par finish to end the first day of competition. She started well during the third round as well, going one-under on the front nine and going two-under on the back nine to round out a 208 final score. Chabon broke the program record for lowest 56-hole total, previously held by Jocelyn Chee and Erica Wang at 209.
Ekkantrong did well during her first tournament with the Lancers and tied for ninth place out of 99 golfers, sporting a 217 final score and going two-under par during the last four holes of the third round. Burberry Zhang also made her CBU debut during the Payne Stewart Memorial, and her best round came on Tuesday, where she finished two-over par and in the top 35. Ghanshyani finished with a 54-hole score of 12-over, tying for 38th, and Samantha Dizon rounded out the Lancer's score with a 95th-place finish.
California Baptist University's women's golf program will now head to Idaho to play in the Coeur D'Alene Collegiate during the final weekend of September.
